behaviour support

Moving you forward through positive behaviour support strategies

Positive Behaviour support Services

We provide Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) services to children and adults.  We can provide PBS services to clients:

  • who are funded by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
  • who are in receipt of funding/ supports from DCJ or another out of Home Care arrangement
  • who need a PBS Plan for Residential Aged Care
  • who are able to fund this service privately

For clients with NDIS Funding, positive behaviour support falls under the ‘Improved Relationships’ budget and in some circumstances, funding for this support can also come ‘Assistance with Daily Life’ budget.

Improved Relationships funding may be available where concerning behaviours restrict a person’s ability to participate fully in everyday life.

Behaviour Support services are required when someone has "challenging behaviour", also known as "behaviour/s of concern".  Examples are:

  • Physical or Verbal Aggression
  • Self-injury
  • Property Destruction
  • Disinhibited Behaviours
  • Sexualised Behaviours
  • Impulsivity and Absconding
  • Pica (eating of non food items)

These behaviours often exist as the person does not have the adaptive or communication skills.  The positive behaviour support process seeks to understand why these behaviours occur and how they can be managed.

Click through our headings above to see what areas we cover, and how we may be able to support you or someone you know.

behaviour support assessments

A behaviour assessment, also known as a Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) is the process undertaken by a Behaviour Support Practitioner to understand why challenging behaviours (also named as Behaviours of Concern) occur.

Our Behaviour Support Practitioners conduct these assessments over several sessions so we can:

  • get to know you/ the client, your strengths and preferences
  • understand what is important to you
  • understand what is, or is not working in your daily life
  • understand your adaptive and communication skills
  • understand what your goals are
  • understand what support the people around you need, to support you/ the client
  • define the behaviour in specific, observable terms
  • analyse what is contributing towards the behaviour, including the environment and supports
  • assess what is maintaining the behaviour

This then helps us to develop a Behaviour Support Plan, which may include strategies to decrease the behaviours, improve the responses to the behaviour and overall help you participate more in life and achieve your goals.

Clinic, Home Visits

Our Behaviour Support Practitioners can provide clinic consultations or at home consultations, which ever suits your situation and lifestyle.

Funding Options

We are registered with the NDIS for those who have access to NDIS funding. Assessments can also be privately paid for if required.

behaviour support plan

A Behaviour Support Plan is a summary document that helps guide the people around the person with the challenging behaviour to support them in their daily participation and achievement of goals. This can be an important document for someone with a disability who may interact with a range of providers and support persons.

A Behaviour Support Plan is written by a Registered Behaviour Support Practitioner, following a Behaviour Assessment.  The Behaviour Support Plan usually contains the following information:

  • a summary of the behaviour, what it looks like, when it occurs, how long it lasts for and so on.
  • an explanation as to why it occurs
  • what can be done to prevent or minimise the behaviour
  • how to respond to/ de escalate the behaviour
  • what strategies and/ or skills to prevent the likelihood of these challenging behaviours occurring.

A Behaviour Support Plan may also outline the use of Restrictive Practices if these are required to keep the client or others safe.  The Behaviour Support Plan will outline the specific circumstances under which any restricted practices can be used within the context of behaviour management, and will outline who is authorised to implement these and for how long.  Regular monitoring and review of Restrictive Practices are required as part of ongoing behaviour support service provision.

behaviour strategies

Our Behaviour Support Practitioners work with clients, their families and supports to provide ongoing behaviour support services.

This includes:

Implementation of the Behaviour Support Plan

This involves training of all people involved in the care and support of the client to understand and implement the plan and strategies on a daily basis.  This may include specific arrangements to monitor and report on the use of Restrictive Practices.

Capacity Building - Behaviour Support Strategies

This involves practice of the strategies identified in the Behaviour Support Plan.  The goal being to build the capacity of the client and others around the client to decrease challenging behaviours. Examples include:

  • Therapeutic supports: strategies for coping with overwhelm, depression or extreme emotions
  • Behaviour management strategies for managing behaviour and emotions
  • Developing social skills to help a person participate in social or community activities
  • Participation in peer or social support groups.

In situations where a person requires high intensity positive behaviour support or supervision from a support worker due to complex needs, funding for this support comes from the ‘Assistance with Daily Life’ budget.

restrictive practices

 We are able to conduct a review of Restrictive Practices as a one off assessment.  This may be required to;

  • Assess the need for development of a Positive Behaviour Support Plan for a piece of Assistive Technology eg. Harness, Car Seat, Stroller, Bed Rails, Safe Surround Bed, wheelchair belts in an Aged Care Facility.
  • Assess the ongoing necessity of Restrictive Practices

This assessment is conducted by a Registered Behaviour Support Practitioner and involves an assessment with the client and their key supports, review of their Behaviour Support Plans, review of Restrictive Practices data.
